On August 24th, 79 AD, the people of Pompeii just expected it to be a typical day. They didn’t even know that Mt Vesuvius was a volcano. It started out just another average day. Gladiators were free to rome the streets, slaves washing clothes with urine, to take grease stains away, etc.
At approximately 1pm, Mt Versuvius started to erupt. There was a 'plug' at the mouth of the volcano, building up tension, ready to go off at any second, like a ticking time bomb. The smoke rising up from the volcano covers the sun, creating night. When the hot smoke rises, it cools in the air, raining the city with volcano pebbles, that have air holes in them, so they float on water. These events start to scare the people entirely, and they watch the volcano as they pray for their lives. Rooftops fall from the weight of the rocks fallen, as they were only built to withstand wind and rain.
7 hours after Mt Versuvius first showed signs of eruption, approximately at 8pm, the streets of Pompeii are almost empty. The ash in the air parches the throat and mouth. Heavy with rock, parts of the mountain falls and boiling ash pours out. 5 times hotter than boiling water, the ash incinerates everything in its path. Death is instantaneous. The people and slaves stranded on the beach turn to charcoal, and the soft tissue is vaporized when the boiling ash had hit them.
The magma chamber collapsed, heading straight for Pompeii. Toxic gas is carried from the surge, and the hydrogen chloride burns the eyes and throat. This event killed, thousands of people, and demolished the entire city of Pompeii, making it a tourist attraction today.
